Mazda Makes a Million MX-5 Miatas

Mazda Motor Corporation announced that production of the Mazda MX-5 Miata – called the Mazda Roadster in Japan – reached one million units on April 22, 2016. The milestone was achieved over 27 years, with mass production of the MX-5 starting at Ujina Plant No. 1 in Hiroshima in April 1989.
The World’s Best-Selling Roadster
The MX-5 already held the Guinness World Record as the best-selling two-seat convertible sports car. Across four generations it has stayed true to the same formula: light weight, a front-mid engine, rear-wheel drive and a cockpit where driver and car feel like one – what Mazda calls Jinba Ittai.
The Fourth Generation
The fourth-generation (ND) MX-5 that was in production at the time of the milestone is the lightest Miata in decades, with a SKYACTIV-G engine and sharp KODO design. A retractable-hardtop RF version followed.
